Many parts of the world have already rung in the new year – soon it will be crowds in London, Edinburgh and across the UK celebrating.

As the final seconds of the year slip away, cities across the U.S. rise in light and color, each skyline marking midnight in its own way. From rivers to rooftops, these fireworks capture a fleeting moment where place and celebration briefly align.

Sydney, considered the New Year's capital of the world, held a colorful celebration that included a moment of silence for the victims of the Bondi Beach attack.

Chicago will once again ring in the New Year with an epic fireworks display over the Chicago River. The city's official event opens at 5 p.m. on New Year's Eve and will continue through midnight, culminating in the explosive display.

But one of the most popular and low-effort ways to ring in the new year is to find a good spot to watch a fireworks display. The pyrotechnics that take place on NYE are often among the mightiest of the year, and are well worth a watch.
